$500 vs. $1,000 vs. $2,000 Auto Deductible: How Long Until the Higher Deductible Pays Off?

Raising a deductible saves premium but transfers more of the next covered loss to you. The useful question is how many claim-free years it takes for those savings to equal the extra deductible.

The short versionIf moving from a $500 deductible to $1,000 saves $180 per year, you accept $500 more per covered claim. The simple break-even is $500 ÷ $180 = 2.8 claim-free years. Use your actual quote differences, not a generic savings percentage.

Deductible break-even calculator

The break-even formula

Claim-free break-even years = (new deductible − old deductible) ÷ annual premium savings

This is deliberately simple. It does not predict whether you will have a claim; it just translates the trade into a time period you can understand.

Use separate numbers for collision and comprehensive

Your policy can have different deductibles by coverage. A higher comprehensive deductible may save a different amount than a higher collision deductible. Run the quote both ways if the carrier allows it.

Cash matters more than optimization

NAIC consumer guidance notes that raising deductibles can lower premium but also stresses whether you can absorb the larger loss. A deductible that looks efficient over five years is a bad choice if you cannot produce it after a crash next week.

FAQ

Does a higher deductible affect liability claims?

Deductibles discussed here generally apply to physical-damage coverages such as collision and comprehensive, not the liability limit you owe someone else.

Should I always pick the longest break-even?

No. The calculator is one factor. Emergency cash and the value of the vehicle matter.

Can lenders limit my deductible choice?

Loan or lease contracts can impose physical-damage insurance requirements. Check the financing agreement.

Sources & methodology

We favor regulators, government agencies and primary insurance-industry data for factual rules and current limits. Calculators use the numbers you enter and clearly labeled illustrative assumptions rather than pretending a national average is your quote.
