Wedding Insurance: What It Covers and What It Costs

Many venues won't confirm your date without it. Here's what liability and cancellation coverage actually protect — and what they don't.

With the average wedding now running well past $30,000, wedding insurance has gone from a niche add-on to something many venues flatly require before they'll confirm your booking. Here's what it actually covers, what it costs, and when to buy it.

Two separate policies, often sold together

Liability insurance

Covers guest injuries and property damage at your event — a guest slips on the dance floor, a centerpiece knocks over a venue's chandelier. Most venues require a Certificate of Insurance naming them as an additional insured before they'll confirm your date. Typically runs $150-300 depending on guest count and whether alcohol is served.

Cancellation / postponement insurance

Reimburses deposits and non-refundable costs if the wedding has to be postponed or canceled for a covered reason — vendor bankruptcy, extreme weather, a venue closure. Runs roughly $125-600 depending on your total wedding budget and coverage limit. Important: a simple change of heart by the couple is not a covered reason.

Coverage TypeTypical Cost Range
Liability only$66-300
Cancellation/postponement$125-600
Alcohol/host liquor liability+$25-50 add-on

What it doesn't cover

Wedding insurance generally doesn't cover the couple's own property — the dress, the rings, or gifts. Those need separate coverage: a rider on your renters or homeowners policy (see our guide on scheduled personal property) covers an engagement ring or wedding gifts far more reliably than event insurance does.

When to buy

As soon as you make your first major non-refundable deposit — that's the point where you actually have something to protect against cancellation. Waiting until closer to the date narrows what triggers are still eligible for cancellation coverage.
