The short versionFor 2026, the federal HSA contribution limit is $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage. The immediate tax value depends on your marginal rates and how the contribution is made; the calculator below lets you use your own assumptions.

The 2026 numbers that matter

The IRS set the 2026 HSA contribution limit at $4,400 for self-only coverage and $8,750 for family coverage. A qualifying HDHP has a deductible of at least $1,700 self-only / $3,400 family and an in-network out-of-pocket ceiling no higher than $8,500 / $17,000. Those numbers are plan-qualification rules, not a recommendation that everyone choose the highest deductible available.

Why the payroll checkbox matters

An HSA contribution can reduce federal taxable income. State treatment varies. Contributions made through an eligible employer cafeteria plan can also avoid Social Security and Medicare payroll tax in many common arrangements; a direct after-tax contribution that you deduct on your return generally does not get that payroll-tax treatment. That is why this tool separates the two.

The right comparison is not “HSA contribution versus doing nothing.” It is often HDHP total cost + HSA tax benefit versus another plan’s total cost.

Three ways to use the result

Plan shopping: subtract the estimated tax benefit and employer HSA money when comparing an HDHP with a PPO.
Cash-flow planning: decide whether you can fund the HSA while still keeping enough cash outside the account for rent, debt payments and emergencies.
Long-term use: qualified medical withdrawals are tax-free, while unused balances can remain in the account instead of expiring each year.

FAQ

Is the calculator a tax return calculator?

No. It is a marginal-rate estimate. State rules, payroll treatment, eligibility, contribution timing and excess-contribution rules can change the result.

Can I contribute the full limit if I become HSA-eligible midyear?

Not always. IRS rules include month-by-month limits and a last-month rule with a testing period. Check Form 8889 instructions or a tax professional for your situation.

Do 2026 Bronze Marketplace plans work with HSAs?

CMS says all 2026 Marketplace Bronze and Catastrophic plans are HSA-eligible under the 2026 rules, expanding HSA access materially.

We favor regulators, government agencies and primary insurance-industry data for factual rules and current limits. Calculators use the numbers you enter and clearly labeled illustrative assumptions rather than pretending a national average is your quote.
